We are celebrating the Whale Day this Saturday, February 20, 2010, here on Maui. I thought it would be a good timing to ask our bloggy friends if they have seen a whale. So my Aloha Friday question for today is “Have you seen a whale yet?” Please feel free to elaborate. Tell us when, where or how. For me, I have seem the whales here on Maui through a “Whale Watch” with the Pacific Whale Foundation. Whales are incredible creatures! If you would like to learn more about whales, please visit the Pacific Whale Foundation site here.
If you would like to know more about Aloha Friday Meme and visit other participants, go to Kailani’s blog An Island Life. Aloha and have a wonderful weekend.
I’ve only seen the ones living in captivity. I understand it’s an amazing site in the ocean.

I saw my first humpback whale on my way to snorkel at Molokini from Maui. It was at the end of April, too.
I love going to Hawaii during whale season. We were blessed to be on Lanai and the Big Island last month. We took a sunset sail (not even a whale watching tour) and got to see a breach about 100 yards off the boat. It was so cool. Andy was able to catch a photo, though it’s a little out of focus.

Oh, I should mention that my first whale sighting was back in 2003.

Yes! I went on a fantastic vacation to Cabo San Lucas in 2005 and we could see the whales breaching from our balcony. It was amazing! Happy Friday!

I have never seen a whale in person.
Personally, I’ve found for whale watching afternoons are better. Whale watching is a bit of a cooperative effort. Many boats & ships will message each other and as the day wears on, there’s a better awareness of where the whales are at.
Mornings may present fog and low coastal clouds. Afternoons can be windier and have whitecaps that can prevent spotting whales.
However, I still prefer going out in the morning because the water is usually calmer. (I tend to get seasick.)
We were on a boat heading back to Maui from a daytrip to Lanai when we saw several whales. It was the first time I’d ever seen them in the wild, and it was SO much better than seeing them in captivity!

Nice picture Liza! For me I’ve done whale watching on the eastern shore and southern shores of Oahu, Hawaii. From the Lanai lookout and from the Diamond Head lookout. Also seen these magnificent creations frolicking about while fishing around those areas.

I haven’t seen a whale- YET- but when I went to Maui years ago, I was swimming underwater and could hear them singing to each other. It was incredible! You live a in a magical place.
