I had posted about the Maui Bus on Maui.net a while ago (in Aug 2007). I am posting it here as an intro to my updated post on the Maui Bus. My kids and I tried riding the bus and we had fun. I do not have the time to post about it this morning, will do it tonight. In the meantime, here’s Part I from Aug 2007. Come back for Part 2 later:
When I first came here in 1994, I was surprised that there was no public buses! Coming from the busy city of Manila, I expected that there would be some type of public transportation here. But no! Guess what I had to do the next few weeks of my arrival? Yep – I had to learn how to drive. It’s either I learn how to drive or I get stuck at home!
Now there are Maui Busses going around. They are not a lot, and they are not bulky. They look like little tourist buses going around. However, they now have a regular route and poeple on Maui are getting the hang of using it. It’s very helpful to whose who do not know how to drive, or just want to save gas.
Just curious..what’s your opinion on Maui Bus? like or dislike?
I didn’t look into the routes, but I remember being really frustrated when I tried to take public transit to Lahaina from the airport. I caved and spend 26 dollars for the shuttle. That’s a LOT more than bus fare. I would love to see better transit on the islands and hope this takes off!
The Big Island also just got buses in the last 10 years.
I still have not rode one yet.
I’m very interested in the public transportation issues on the Big Island.
