WAILUKU — Maui County Council members voted 5-3 late Friday night, approving the controversial Makena Resort redevelopment on second and final reading — with 44 development conditions.

Voting in favor of rezoning 603 acres in South Maui to accommodate the 800-unit luxury home development were Council Members Riki Hokama, Bill Medeiros, Mike Molina, Joe Pontanilla and Mike Victorino. Casting dissenting votes were Council Members Michelle Anderson, Danny Mateo and Jo Anne Johnson. Council Member Gladys Baisa was traveling out of state and excused.

The council members’ vote ended another long day of testimony and debate in the Maui County Council Chambers as opponents of the massive Makena Resort made a last-ditch effort to get enough council members to reverse their previous votes and halt the controversial development. Instead, council members stuck by positions they held in a Dec. 11 initial vote on the project.

The final vote came at 10:50 p.m. Friday.
